Dubbed as the “Pearl of the Orient Seas,” the Philippines is an archipelago nation comprised of 7,107 islands. With a total land area of 115,739 sq. mi. (299,764 sq. km.), the country is blessed with verdant mountains, lush countryside, rich marine life and what some consider to be the best beaches in the world.
The Philippines has an estimated population of 80 million with almost an eighth residing in the capital of Metro Manila. The country is divided into three main areas, the northern island of Luzon, the middle group of islands called the Visayas and the southern island of Mindanao. Moreover, the country has 73 provinces and 15 regions. Each region possesses its own special traits but the warmth and friendliness of its people is its common bond.
The Filipino people are a mix of the the Malay, Chinese and Spanish races. The culture has also been influenced by Western thought as the country was a former colony of Spain and the United States. Filipino is the national language while English is also widely-spoken and used extensively by businesses, schools and government.
There are three distinct weather seasons in the Philippines – the cool season which runs from October to February; the hot and dry season from March to May; and the rainy season from June to September. The average year-round humidity is at 77%. The best period to visit is between October and May.
In terms of religion, the country is 80% Catholic, 10% Protestant, 5% Muslim with the other religions making up the remaining balance. The country enjoys a democratic form of government with a presidential system and a bicameral legislature. The judiciary is headed by the Supreme Court. The local currency is the Philippine Peso. Most major currencies can be exchanged at hotels, banks and foreign exchange dealers. Outside of Manila, the Philippine peso is preferred. Most major credit cards are also accepted by establishments.
